WASHINGTON (AP) -- Capitol Police said Friday they had detained a man after a rifle and an explosive were discovered in his vehicle near the Capitol building.

Capitol Police spokeswoman Sgt. Kimberly Schneider said a police officer noticed a rifle case in the man's car when the person stopped to ask a question. He was taken into custody after a further search found a rifle, an explosive device, ammunition and "several other items of concern" in the vehicle.

The incident took place near the Library of Congress several blocks southeast of the Capitol.

She said police are continuing to search the vehicle. The man was not identified.
